Why take action?
Long Term Damage
  • The tunnel would increase traffic congestion.
  • All of the trees between Imberhorne Lane and the station would be destroyed.
  • Removal of trees will increase the risk of landslips.
  • Devastation of a beautiful mature landscape.
  • Destruction of wildlife which will be permanently lost.
  • Destruction of an excellent woodland recreation facility for youngsters.
  • Pollution of residential areas by tunnel ventilation equipment.
  • Ever increasing levels of noise and vibration from passing traffic.
  • Years of planning blight would needlessly affect hundreds of property owners who would be unable to move house when they need to and would incur heavy financial losses.
  • Disturbing ex-railway land runs the risk of contaminating adjacent properties (the land carries more than 100 years of contamination from hydrocarbon and hydraulic fluid products). Licences or exemptions are required before it can be moved anywhere.
  • Short Term Damage during Construction Period

  • Worth way pedestrian, cycle and horse traffic would be forced onto local roads during the two to three year construction period, causing additional congestion and accident risks.
  • High levels of daily noise pollution.
  • High levels of vibration for many residents.
  • Air pollution from extensive diesel engined vehicle operations.
  • Extensive heavy traffic entering and leaving the site adding congestion.
  • Risk of increase in serious accidents.
  • Stress and anxiety arising from uncertainty about the future of this ill-conceived and flawed plan.
